How will your hard drive data
be "neutralized" or "erased?"
Sirius Computer Associates exercises due diligence in protecting our
clients' interests and information. Technicians at Sirius Computer
Associates are experienced in providing these services, which include
erasing, overwriting, and physically destroying hard drives.
Erasing/Overwriting replaces
data stored on the drive or disk with a predetermined
pattern of information that carries no meaning, wipes the disk clean, and
rewrites the disk with meaningless data to ensure that no traces of the
original contents are left. A hard disk
platter may contain tracks or sectors that are damaged or unusable but
still contain sensitive data nonetheless. If overwriting is prohibited or
otherwise not an option, the
storage media should be physically destroyed.
Destruction of Hard Drives
All hard drives that are not to be used again, whether or not
they are defective, should be overwritten or destroyed. Added security awareness dictates that, when it's practical,
hard drives that are still operable but perhaps have been identified as
no longer economically viable to use should be overwritten
before heading for destruction. In today's environment, with security and
confidentiality uppermost in everyone's consciousness and with serious
security breaches a more common risk, physical destruction of hard
drives – even those which are defective – should be done to an extent
that precludes any possible future use. Our personnel are trained in applying physical
force to mangle and mutilate the drive and its connectors so that it can
never be connected or inserted into a functioning computer again.
Disposal of Hazardous Materials
Because of hazardous substances contained within CRT monitors and
electronic components such as APC units and other items, disassembly and
disposal of the hardware must be performed strictly according to
regulations set by federal and state governments. In particular, as
of January 2007, the state of California has new rules and guidelines
regarding the disposal of this "e-waste." Sirius Computer Associates
is registered with the California Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC)
as a Universal Waste Electronic Device (UWED) and cathode ray tube (CRT)
handler.
Every step of the process of overwriting, destroying and sanitizing a hard drive is handled
conscientiously and professionally by trained technicians at Sirius Computer
Associates.
